CAN+Automotion, have helped upgrade obsolete control system with discrete components, using ESX controllers and achieve near original performance levels, in a Forestry machine. This provides a new lease of life for machines which helps contractors utilise spare capacity in their fleet. So far over 6 machines have been upgraded with our solution to give old machines a new lease of life.

Forestry industry in Australia/NZ employs a lot of high productivity machines imported from around the world, and a number of them while nearly 15 years or more in use, are still well maintained and perform adequately. Spare parts availability decides whether the machines have useful life left in them or not. As long as structurally sound, the challenge for the owners then is to ensure that control systems perform at their required level.

In the last 20 years, electronics has undergone major changes in component design. Simple one to one signal amplifiers using analog devices have been replaced by programmable digital controllers with much more capabilities to incorporate more complex machine functionality. This with field bus communication interface has meant that machines built in the last 5 years have mostly been equipped with CAN Bus networked control systems which allows distributed control, where input, and output modules are located separately on the network with a master which sometimes also is part of an operator interface usually located in the operator’s cab.

For the end user – the fleet operator or the contractor, this means that if the machine is structurally sound, and capable of performing well, the main consideration is whether to upgrade the whole control systems to the modern bus based networked system or not. Most manufacturers have made this quantum leap from discrete electronics to field bus networked complete control system, and there is no going back. For the end user with old machines they have one of the two following options:

  • Keep repairing and persevere with the old control system, (reduced reliability)
  • Upgrade to the complete new system which requires distributed control components, system design and integration.

There is no simple replacement to upgrade discrete components when they fail. Either keep old Joysticks ICL301, 303 or ICL425/ICL435 or the mini lever Joysticks ICM4 series if they are in good working condition and keep repairing the obsolete PWM driver cards.

CAN Automotion offers a simple drop in type solution with 1 x STW ESX controller  to replace 2 x IPS302 amplifiers and will drive up to 12 x PWM solenoids, accepting Joystick input signals from the older series of ICL3/4 or ICM 4 series of Joysticks. ESX controller is a standalone product which can work without other networked modules for Input/Output extensions. Once tuned, the parameter values are stored in EEPROM in the ESX controller it does not need constant retuning as it retains the variables. CAN Automotion offers wiring harnesses as part of the upgrade solution, crimped with suitable connectors to fit various solenoid valve types. STW-ESX controllers offer a single controller solution without the complexity of a distributed system with multiple input and output modules to be wired. ESX controllers can work as a standalone as well as part of a distributed control system with CAN Bus/CANopen network as a Master. Opus A3 display can be kept permanently connected or removed depending on whether it is advantageous or not to keep the user interface connected to the control system. In applications similar to the above, being a programmable controller, ESX controller outputs can be tuned to work with many makes and designs of solenoid valves with and without current regulation of PWM outputs, including PVG series with 0.25Ub to 0.75Ub control signal.

We also offer Suregrip Controls Joysticks and Handle grips with similar design and ergonomics like the ICL3/4 series and can be directly connected to work with ESX controllers easily with a slight change in the program. It is also possible to start with existing Joysticks and once worn out they can be upgraded to SureGrip Joysticks with 2.5V±2.0V output with 5V input. We can also supply GengeThoma Joysticks with 3 axis Joysticks similar to Mini levers where operators are looking to replace old mini- lever style Joysticks.

Two section valve control using Dual Axis Sure Grip Joystick and STW programmable IOXP controller

image004Sure Grip controls or Genge Thoma joystick can be used with STW ESX IOXp programmable controller designed specially for mobile applications. This controller has robust housing design (Protection class IP67) suited for Agricultural, forestry and construction industry standard. IOXp has range of I/O’s which can be programmed based on customer requirement. STW ESX IOXp has max 26 I/O’s including max 6 Digital/Frequency inputs,6-8 Analog inputs,4 PWM output( 3A), optional 4 output (4A) and can also be configured to drive 4 comprising of Danfoss PVG valve section.It has an in built 5V or 10 V stabilised voltage to supply for additional devices such as Joystick, sensors etc.

We offer a package in a kit form that can drive up to 6 section valves which includes 2 joysticks (sure grip or Genge Thoma) ,1 STW ESX-C Programmable controller, 1 Wachendorff Opus 4.3 inch screen(Optional), suitable wire harness, CAD drawing. STW ESX-C programmable controller designed specially for mobile applications. This controller has robust cast aluminium housing design (Protection class IP65,optionally up to IP 69k) suited for Agricultural, forestry and construction industry standard for extreme temperature(-40 C to +85 C). ESX-C controller has different types of IO’s which can be programmed based on customer requirement. STW ESX-C has max 48 I/Os including max10 Digital/Frequency inputs,8 Analog inputs,22 PWM/ Digital output (up to 5A) and also available to drive up to 8 Danfoss PVG valves. It has in built 5V or 10 V stabilised voltage supply for additional device. Opus screen can be used for the valves settings such as Imin ,Imax ,Ramp up, Ramp down or to monitor these vales on the screen.
